Design process

01

Define the requirements

I usually start by defining the general business needs and requirements for the project and understanding the deliverables, timeline, and expectations. It's crucial to stay aligned with the rest of the team. During this stage, I prefer to note down my own hypotheses about the expected problem.

02

Discover the issues

In this phase, I gather information, communicate with people, and delve into the problem space. I also review user reports to understand the reasons behind the product's current state. If user research is not feasible within the budget or timeline, I will conduct impromptu interviews to ensure that I'm not designing blindly.

03

Interpret the results

During the interpretation phase, I analyze the users, their needs, and pain points. I create or revise personas, journey maps, storyboards, and problem statements. In this stage, I establish our goals and the metrics we need to achieve for success. This phase is always very insightful.

04

Ideate over solutions

The ideation phase is really enjoyable for me! I enjoy involving developers, other designers, stakeholders, and customer support in an ideation session to explore various options. I like to let my creativity flow freely and generate as many solutions as possible. At this stage, I prioritise quantity over quality.

05

Prototype

I will create an interactive prototype in this phase. It could be a high-fidelity Figma prototype or an interactive website, depending on where I am in the process and what I want to test. The level of detail and fidelity will vary accordingly.

06

Test, iterate and test again

During this final phase, I will test the prototype with users. This may involve quick guerilla tests as well as full-fledged usability test sessions. The results of these tests will help us understand what needs to be changed and fixed.

Design philosophies

01

My designer hat

With my background as a brand designer, I speak the visual language of the creators I collaborate with. I believe it's crucial to understand and empathize not only with your audience but also with your team. Having a deep appreciation for design principles and aesthetics allows me to grasp the challenges faced by the designers on my team and articulate precisely the vision and brand identity we aim to achieve.

02

Involve everyone

In this phase, I gather information, communicate with people, and delve into the problem space. I also review user reports to understand the reasons behind the product's current state. If user research is not feasible within the budget or timeline, I will conduct impromptu interviews to ensure that I'm not designing blindly.

Design principles

01

Empathy

I like to build with the user in mind at all times. If I can empathise, then I can advocate for a solution that people actually need.

02

Mindfulness

Mindfulness and intentionality go hand in hand. At every step of the process, I am mindful that I’m still solving the right problem and ensure all design decisions are deliberate.

03

Experimentation

Design is testing. I think testing out designs and getting feedback is the most rewarding, validating and humbling part of design and I LIVE for it. Nothing gets my blood pumping like doing usability tests or seeing results of tests in the morning.

04

Aesthetics

I adore visual design. Creating high fidelity prototypes and designs is my happy place and brings me a lot of joy. I tend to express this love though building design systems.
